Parul,
I know a little something about Bay Area real estate, plus one of my best friends is a broker. Try to hang in there. This always happens. Honestly? You did buy at a bad time -- that's the bad news, but the good news? Location! Location! Location! You bought in one of the best areas in the Bay Area, and things are bound to change. Of course it'a buyer's market right now, but to sell (as you know) would mean to take a loss. Hang in there, and roll with the punches. You'll eventually be glad you did. Then when you see the returns start to really come in on your investment you'll be glad you did.
Traditionally, 5 years is the average time to stay in a home, but with the economy being what it is -- well, let's just wait and see what this new Administration brings. From what the experts around me are saying (and I have some sound advisors around me), we haven't seen nothing yet. Make no new major purchases. Hold on to your money, and get ready for a rough ride. The good thing is that you do have your home and hopefully it's at a good fixed rate.
